The Tuscany is an Italian region prized for its beauty, culture and gastronomy. We praise it in many ways on this site. However, some places may disappoint and not be worth the train fare or the hour's drive. To avoid disappointment during your stay, discover our list of the best places to visit. Ten places to avoid in Tuscany.

1. Pisa's historic center in high season

If the famous Leaning tower worth seeingIn July and August, it's best to avoid the historic center of Pisa. You'll be surrounded by hordes of tourists, making the experience less pleasant and less authentic. Instead, opt for a low-season visit or explore the surrounding area rather than stay in this crowded zone.

2. The crowded beaches of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi

These seaside resorts have lost some of their charm due to their increasing popularity with tourists. Their beaches are often overcrowded, and prices in nearby restaurants are often excessive. We therefore recommend discovering other, more unspoilt and peaceful corners of the Tuscan coast. There are many many more discreet beaches if you want to get away from mass tourism (especially in summer). However, if you're looking for a few days away from the crowds and aquatic pleasures (windsurfing, jet skiing etc...), check out our article on the seaside resorts in Tuscany and nice places in Viareggio

Alternative Try the beaches of Marina di Alberese or Cala Violina for a calmer, more unspoilt setting. See our article on this subject.

3. Tourist restaurants in central Florence

Florence is renowned for its gastronomy, but unfortunately some downtown establishments take advantage of their location to offer mediocre dishes at exorbitant prices. Don't be fooled by these restaurants, and look instead for addresses frequented by locals, outside the historic center.

Tip:

To avoid unpleasant surprises, check online reviews before choosing a restaurant and look for places where the residents are going to eat. Sometimes these restaurants don't look like much from the outside, but you'll love them inside!

4. Souvenir stores near tourist sites

As in many tourist destinations, souvenir stores close to popular attractions often charge far too much for the quality of the products they offer. Choose shops further away from the tourist sites, or shop in local markets for authentic items without breaking the bank.

5. Monteriggioni, an overrated citadel

Despite its picturesque appearance, the citadel of Monteriggioni has lost some of its soul due to an influx of tourists and a growing number of souvenir stores. What's more, the entrance fee is quite high and the interest of the site is limited. Instead, opt for a visit to one of the less crowded medieval cities.

Alternative:

the medieval village of San Gimignanoalthough also a tourist destination, has retained a more authentic atmosphere and is well worth a visit.

6. Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa

Although a must-see for history and architecture buffs, Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli can be overrun by groups of tourists and aggressive street vendors. If you wish to visit this emblematic site, it's best to do so in the morning or at the end of the day, when there are fewer crowds.

7. Cinque Terre tourist villages

Some of the Cinque Terre villages are also suffering from their own success, and are now overrun by hordes of tourists. So it's best to look for alternatives, such as the charming towns of Levanto or Bonassola, to fully enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this region.

8. Pisa airport

Notorious for delays and poor customer service, Pisa airport can quickly turn your trip into a nightmare. If possible, opt instead for a flight to Florence or Bologna airports, which are more reliable and better served. Finally, don't forget that for groups of 2 or 3 or more, a car is less polluting than a plane from France, and you'll save yourself a car rental (which can also be a vacation nightmare :-)).

9. The Viareggio Cup, a festival to be avoided

Every July, the Viareggio Cup takes place, a sporting event officially named "Viareggio Cup World Football Tournament Coppa Carnevale". This soccer competition brings thousands of people to the town of Viareggio (Province of Lucca), which can quickly become unpleasant if you're not there for the matches. If you're looking for peace, quiet and authenticity, stay elsewhere or postpone your visit to discover this charming town without the inconvenience of the festivities.

10. Out-of-town shopping centers

If you want to shop in Tuscany, choose the local markets and boutiques in the city centers rather than the big supermarkets on the outskirts. Not only will you find more authentic productsNot only will you be contributing to local economic development and promoting responsible consumption, but you'll also be enjoying a friendly, relaxing atmosphere.

By avoiding these overly touristy, overcrowded and often overpriced places, you can fully appreciate the richness of the Tuscany in terms of culture, gastronomy and natural heritage. Take the time to plan your visits and discover the lesser-known places for a unique and unforgettable experience.
